Yamaha DSR Powered
Speakers Provide Hope for
Baptist Church
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.—New Hope Baptist Church in Atlantic City,
who first opened their doors in 1941, recently found themselves in desperate
need of a new speaker system that would fit into their limited budget. The
contemporary-style house of worship that seats 250 called upon the assistance
of ACIR Professional (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) to provide a system that would
meet their needs and their budget. ACIR’s Bobby Harper recommended Yamaha
DSR112CA powered speakers, to be followed this year by the installation of
DSR118s subs.
Harper said that size, weight, price, and most importantly,
performance were the deciding factors to installing the Yamaha DSRs. “Power and points were readily available,” states
Harper. “We replaced the old speakers and hung the DSR's right in front of the new
ACIR-installed Eiki LC XL100 5000 lumen projector location so that we would
have power readily available.”
“The new Yamaha DSR’s add much needed power, clarity, and
enhancement to our worship services,” states John Howard, Jr., Director of
Worship & Arts for New Hope Baptist Church. “Our audio capabilities have
expanded tenfold with the new Yamaha DSR’s!!”
|
The church still has an old analog console that will soon be
replaced by a Yamaha LS9-32 digital console. Amplifiers are being phased out in
favor of adding additional Yamaha DSRs for monitors.
The DSR powered speaker series consists of the DSR112,
DSR115, DSR215, and DSR118W subwoofer. All
models feature 1300W high power and efficiency (LF: 850W, HF: 450W on all
models except DSR118W @ 800W) with class D amplification; FIR filter processing
(FIR-X Tuning); and D-Contour a multi-band dynamic processor for consistent clarity
at both high and low output levels.

ACIR Pro Supports
Bennett’s 85th Birthday Bash at the Met
EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J.—Founded in 1883 and now
in its 128th season, The Metropolitan Opera is the vibrant home for talented
singers, conductors, composers, orchestra musicians, and dancers from around
the world. Known as the venue for the world’s greatest voices, The Met recently
hosted the 85th birthday celebration of legendary singer, Tony
Bennett. Singing at The Met was not only the singer’s birthday gift
to himself, but to the sold-out crowd that flocked to the 3800-seat venue’s
Lincoln Center address. Guest artists included Elton John, Aretha Franklin, and
Alejandro Sanz.
ACIR Professional (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) provided the
audio necessary to reinforce the sound at The Met in order to achieve the live
sound to which Mr. Bennett has become accustomed. A Yamaha PM5D-EX was the
console of choice for long-time Bennett front of house engineer, Tom Young.
Young, whose rider preference is a PM5D, said the 5D-EX DSP5D expander was used
as the primary snake with its ease of running a Cat5 cable due to space
limitations of running a traditional copper snake in the venue. The Met, a
long-established opera house, has minimal need for amplified sound.
In addition, ACIR provided d&b Q-1 line arrays that were
configured as left/right flown using eight boxes per side. Four Q-1 boxes per
side were ground stacked on top of a Q1 sub, powered with d&b D-12
amplifiers. An assortment of microphones from Sennheiser, Neumann,
AudioTechnica, and Heil Sound were used for the show.
Tony Bennett’s latest CD, Duets II, was released in
September in conjunction with the singer’s 85th birthday and features a celebrated list of artists including Aretha Franklin,
Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse, Michael Buble, Norah Jones, John Mayer, Queen
Latifah, Carrie Underwood, and many others.

RESORTS INTERNATIONAL’S SUPESTAR THEATER UPGRADES WITH YAMAHA PM1D DIGITAL AUDIO CONSOLE
Resorts International Casino Hotel is located at the northern end of the famed Boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey along with eight other of Atlantic City's 12 casinos. First opened in 1868 as the Chalfonte Hotel, Resorts has since set the standard for casino gaming and entertainment since when gaming was legalized in 1976 and becoming the East Coast's first official casino in 1978. Ten years later, in 1988, the property was purchased by Merv Griffin who maintained proprietorship until he sold the property in 1996 to Sun International. Sun held onto Resorts until 2001 Sun when the company sold the property to Colony Capital LLC, Resorts current owner. Throughout the past 30 years, the property has become synonymous with superior service, world-class casino gambling, luxurious accommodations, fine dining, and the biggest and brightest stars in entertainment. Recently, the property’s Superstar Theater upgraded its front of house position with a Yamaha PM1D Digital Audio Console installed by ACIR Professional in Egg Harbor Township, NJ. The 1,350 seat, 17,500 square foot entertainment venue features headliners like Jerry Seinfeld, Whoopi Goldberg, Tom Jones, Don Rickles, Snoop Dogg, Aaron Lewis and Chris Isaak, to name a few. “Of course, we wanted to replace an aging analog console, and the Yamaha PM1D was chosen for a variety of reasons,” states Clint Pease, Lead Audio Engineer, Superstar Theater. “Reliability was a big factor especially since Yamaha has the most experience building digital consoles. I still use an older Yamaha O3D console for recording, playback, sub-mixing etc. We get a lot of visiting engineers in the Superstar Theatre and it's reasonable to expect that many wouldn't be familiar with all the digital consoles available. With the PM1D, I can display and organize 48 inputs on the console’s top layer which is helpful in building confidence when using the 1D. The PM1D is, as Yamaha states, ‘the flagship of the line,’ and I wanted the best for our theatre.”
“It's been a wonderful asset for us,” says Pease. “We've been doing the Legends Show which has a comprehensive set up including a live band, click track and multi-track playback, in ear mixes and as many as fourteen RF vocal mics. Many times, we've had to strike and reset the show overnight to accommodate a weekend headliner, which in the past was a tedious, labor intensive task. Now, with our PM1D a lot of that work can be as simple as save and recall.” “The Superstar Theater is one of the most prestigious theaters in AC, and we are very happy that Clint decided the Yamaha PM1D was the right choice for the venue, states ACIR Professional co-owner John Grasso. “We will continue to support the staff at the Superstar by providing the right products and services to meet their future needs.”
Pease adds that the audio staff’s next goal is to get monitor engineer Bruce Raykiewicz a PM5D or possibly a CS1D on stage for monitors which he notes would give the Superstar’s system a solid infrastructure. “I've been doing live sound for 37 years and getting this new desk has really been exciting for me; I'm really enjoying my work again. The 1D is just fun to use!”

AC HILTON IS ‘IN THE GAME’ WITH YAMAHA PM5D DIGITAL CONSOLES
─New Console at Front of House Joins PM5D Monitor Console─
The Atlantic City Hilton recently installed a new Yamaha PM5D digital audio console for front of house use in their entertainment venue. A spectacular state-of-the-art venue built to showcase the talents of celebrity entertainers, the theater boasts a seating capacity of over 1,400. The console was purchased by Yamaha dealer, ACIR Professional in Egg Harbor Township, NJ. “We are extremely happy that the Hilton decided to purchase a second Yamaha PM5D,” states John Grasso, ACIR Pro co-owner. “This console is so popular and familiar, that it’s a breeze to set up a show for visiting engineers. The Hilton knows that if they have any questions about the console, we’re right around the corner and there to assist.”
The Atlantic City Hilton Casino Resort has charmed the southernmost end of the world’s famous Boardwalk since opening as the Golden Nugget in December 1980. The property was the first in Atlantic City to be built from the ground up as a luxury casino hotel with award-winning accommodations, five-star dining, world-class entertainment, and 10 'til night life. Recent acts to appear at the Hilton Theater include Patti LaBelle, Kool & the Gang, KC & the Sunshine Band, Jerry Seinfeld, Damon Wayans, Sinbad, Gin Blossoms, Grand Funk Railroad, The Four Tops, and many more. The theater also has a very popular series of ‘Legends’ shows including an upcoming tribute to Billy Joel.
The theater’s audio staff consisting of Kevin Kelly, lead audio technician, and Joe White, monitor engineer, had until recently been renting a PM5D from ACIR Pro, and made the decision to purchase a PM5D due to the amount rider requests for the console. The new console joins a PM5D already positioned at monitors. “We chose PM5Ds for a variety of reasons: the flexibility, reliability and sound make the console a pleasure to work on and the company’s tech support system is excellent. This console is usually on every rider so most of the incoming engineers have their show on a card. If they don't, it doesn't take that long to set it up.”
“On a side note,” adds Kelly, “I still use my Yamaha ProMix01 digital console, which has to be at least 15 years old and still works perfectly. Yamaha has been in the digital console business longer than anyone and have learned from engineers what people want in a console.”
“The PM5D monitor board has been fantastic,” notes Joe White, monitor engineer. “The Hilton has a very diverse entertainment schedule and the room works six to seven nights a week including rock and production shows and large orchestras. We have come up with templates that we use for monitors that have all the patching and routing along with EQ which saves a great deal of time to get in and out of all the different shows we handle. For the large production shows, everything is scene-generated which is fantastic on a fast-paced show. By saving the show on a card, we are up and running in no time at all. The PM5D has been a real workhorse for us; it’s very flexible, easy to learn, and use. We’ve used the monitor console for 250 shows without one glitch. And, on top of that, the desk really sounds great.”
